EDUCATIONAL TOOLS
Do
I Look Fat? has been used as an educational tool in a variety of
higher education settings while seeding discussion inside the gay community
and the mental health community. It informs teachers, doctors, therapists,
nutritionists, activists, facilitators, and loved ones diagnostically
and emotionally. Perhaps most importantly, the film informs those of us
struggling with body image and eating disorders of how we are not alone.

Screenings
Some of the most successful screenings have been those in which co-sponsorship
from local resources was utilized. The benefits of pooling from different
resources within a local area are many: it widens and diversifies publicity,
increasing attendence; it allows those in need of resources to leave screenings
with a sense of where to go for help; it brings local resources together
to build community support in a holisitc manner.

Using
Movie Chapters
Because
body image concerns and eating disordered behavior are born from a multitude
of complex factors, I felt it was important to organize the film into
chapters. The chapters help to delineate these factors, e.g., bullying
or internalized homophobia, in an instructive manner that buttresses
the film as a teaching tool. Thoughts are more easily organized and
the material more digestible.
Because facilitators may not always have one hour to view the film (Do
I Look Fat? is 56" long) and include discussion,
the chapters allow you to hone in on individual segments as a way to
deepen material and avoid potential time contraints.
